The sun shone down on Hallam Gardens this Saturday, on what was probably our most successful hanging basket event to-date!
The fine weather brought everyone out in droves and we sold out of all plants within just an hour and a half!
We would like to thank all who came down to support the event and send special thanks to all who volunteered their time to help plant up the hanging baskets. Thanks too to Woodbank Nurseries who supplied the wonderful plants for the event. I’m sure everyone agrees – they were blooming marvellous!

Following the installation of our new flag pole at the end of last year, we’re proud to finally be flying our green flag!
You can spot this new addition at the Bramhall Lane entrance to the park.

The sun was shining, but it was certainly was chilly, so it was wonderful to see so many people in the park to partake in the Christmas Cheer (and hot chestnuts!).
Everyone was in fine voice and sung along beautifully to Stockport Silver Band’s musical accompaniment. What a jolly way to herald the advent of Christmas.

A Fastigiate Oak (narrow spreading)
These trees are as old as the park and are coming to the end of their lifespan. Three are currently earmarked from removal and will be replaced with fastigiate oaks which just means narrow rather than wide spreading so that they will fit into the space available.
The oaks will support more wildlife than the poplars so we are quite content with the change.

Oh dear ! The rain came down with a vengeance. It was dry and sunny on Friday and even sunnier on Sunday but Saturday, the day of our biggest event of the year was a washout. Quite a few people came out and joined in the fun but many had to make a dash for shelter as the rain became heavier. However the band played on and kept our spirits up. I looked across at one point to see that the cover over the conductor was bowing in a rather perilous way but he nonchalantly raised a hand and tipped the deluge out.
The children and some adults enjoyed having their faces painted and tried the circus skills – not nearly as easy as it looks when done by experts.
Everyone was captivated by the Punch and Judy which was a great hit once again.

For the first time in it’s hundred year history Hallam Gardens was entered for a Green Flag in 2009. This meant that the park had to be kept at the peak of perfection at all times and involved a lot of extra hard work from Parks staff with the assistance of the Friends Group.
Thus we found ourselves digging frozen ground in winter to maintain the crisp lawn edges and rooting out every weed and unwanted tree shoot that raised it’s head above ground and with years warm wet weather those weeds grew like …. well weeds.
However all the hard work paid dividends as we were delighted to learn that we have succeeded in being awarded a Green Flag. Not too sure what happens now as we don’t have a flag pole but there must be a way around that
***GREEN FLAG UPDATE***
We got a Flag Pole!

Well we were all a bit worried about the weather to start off with, but luckily the rain stayed away and we all had a fantastic time. It was great to see so many people (and Teddy bears!) enjoying their picnics in the park! Check out the pictures in our gallery page!
The Punch and Judy show, face painter and ‘story-time’ proved popular with the children whilst the music from Stockport Silver Band kept everyone else entertained. [Keep an eye out for them all again at our next event in August!] The fireman turned up with the fire engine (which I think was loved by big and small kids alike!) and all in all it was a wonderful day that we hope was enjoyed by all who came. We hope to see you all again at our next event on August 1st.
